SWIMMING

St. X won the state swimming championship for the 19th time in a row. Kudos to St. X. Swimming is one of the unsung sports events of high schools. Being a Manual High graduate, I was happy to note that the Manual boys finished third. On the other side of the equation, the Manual girls won the third state championship in a row. Kudos to the girls. They have to get up at 5 o’clock in the morning to practice swimming. Then they have a full day at school. Swimming takes as much discipline and determination as any sport. The newspaper indicated that Manual may be establishing a dynasty. I hope that’s true because the public schools need to be competitive with the private schools, and this could be a step in that direction.
